Beachbody Hydrate vs Gatorade and other Sports Drinks
Many years ago researchers in Florida sought an alternative to plain water for the Gators football players working out in high heat and humidity. These college athletes in peak physical condition needed to replenish electrolytes, boost their energy, and re-hydrate. The result was a new liquid refreshment the researchers dubbed “Gatorade”. Not only was the product successful in their college sports program, but they spawned an entirely new genre of soft drinks with worldwide popularity.
If you happen to be a young athlete in excellent shape doing strenuous activity in high heat and humidity, the original formulation of Gatorade may be just the ticket to help keep you going. If you are none of the above, then it is questionable whether you really need it. Factor in the commercial variations with all kinds of unhealthy chemicals added and sports drinks start to become a bad idea for most, if not all of us.
Beachbody offers an alternative to sports drinks to help keep you energized and hydrated during a strenuous workout. In keeping with their overall philosophy, it is made with healthy ingredients. This means that it wouldn’t be fair to compare Hydrate to most sports drinks. They are loaded with stuff NOBODY should drink, such as harmful preservatives, artificial flavorings, and food dyes that are banned in most European countries. Gatorade does make an organic product, however, so it would be more of a fair comparison to Beachbody Hydrate.
Gatorade Organic for hydration is probably the closest thing in their product line to the original formulation. It contains only seven ingredients: water, organic cane sugar, citric acid, organic natural flavor, sea salt, sodium citrate, and potassium chloride. The total carbs are 30 grams per serving. For electrolytes it contains 230mg of sodium and 65mg of potassium per serving. This is a simple, but effective recipe made with healthy ingredients and I applaud Gatorade for getting back to basics. It’s a lot more sugar than most people should consume though even while exercising.
Beachbody Hydrate has a few more items on the nutrition label than the Gatorade Organic. The sugar in Hydrate is significantly lower at just 10 grams. The sodium and potassium counts are the same. Hydrate includes magnesium and a leaf extract called “quercetin”. Hydrate is a powder so it contains silica to keep it from caking. In addition to beet sugar and dextrose it contains the stevia leaf extract as a sweetener. Some of the sweetness comes from natural mandarin orange flavor and other natural flavors.
Along with significantly less sugar than Gatorade, Beachbody Hydrate notably includes magnesium and quercetin. Magnesium is an important electrolyte that should definitely be included for sports hydration. Quercitin is a powerful performance-enhancing phytonutrient. It can help improve endurance and exercise-induced muscle fatigue. Quercetin is a flavonol found in many fruits, vegetables, leaves, and grains.
Beachbody Hydrate is far superior to the vast majority of commercial sports drinks. It contains natural ingredients that are proven beneficial to people performing strenuous activity, while leaving out the harmful ingredients found in most similar products. Beachbody Hydrate is better than Gatorade Organic as it has a lot less sugar and adds the benefits of magnesium and quercetin. Beachbody Hydrate is also formulated to be more readily absorbed and utilized by the body than other sports drinks.
Not everyone needs sports drinks. For those who do, Beachbody Hydrate offers a much better solution. It only makes sense that people concerned with their health would choose a healthy product and Beachbody has met that need.
